The Magazine
As long as there has been a NSFG there has been a magazine of some sort,
a forum for the members to indulge in a little bit of what they fancy.
In the beginning Sue Lewis was at the helm of both the Group and the clubzine
- Star Paws. Issue 7 saw a name change (to
Apocrypha) and
the beginning of Ken Shinn's strip - Krupke's World.
With issue 9 the world would never be the same again with the debut of
Frogs
in Space ('drawn' by a chap called Andrew Stitt who soon moved away
to London).
A move into the '90s saw Paul Curtis and Ken Shinn taking over the
group, and responsibility for the magazine. They put together the fanzine
Big
Trouble in Norwich. Then Andrew returned to Norwich . .
. He had a plan to expand the magazine from a group missive to one that
would go on sale around the fine city of Norwich. Paul and Ken were happy
to let him take over as editor. Armed with an Atari ST, printer, paper,
scissors and glue he was ready. The title of the next issue was already
in place . . .

In comics, the early Ninties was an era of gimmicky covers, signed
and numbered limited editions, sealed bags, inserts and trading cards.
The NSFG (or at least Andrew), never slow to jump on the back of a bandwagon,
took note and incorporated all of these ideas into his first issue.
Maintaining the A4 format, Andrew collected an assortment of items
from Group members. For the sake of the reading public a special strip
supplement was put together covering the stories so far of Krupke's World
and Frogs in Space. 100 copies were photocopied. Andrew and Paul collated
the pages and stapled them together. Ken signed and numbered the cover,
with the help of Andrew's indispensable 10-in-1 colour pen. The NSFG Magazine
hit the shelves and counters of Norwich.

After the gimmicks of the first issue, Andrew wanted
to make some changes. The main one was to switch to the smaller A5 size,
much beloved by the Small Press. Secondly a theme was picked to try and
tie the magazine together - 70's retro beach party special - complete with
tasteful yellow cover (in an unintentional two variant cover)

Due to be the Autumn issue, the theme was supposed
to be Science and Fiction but because of delays Andrew decided on combining
this with the Doctor Who special. Unfortunately, this meant the science
got squeezed out. Two issues squeezed into 48 pages
by a 'Time Ram' Combination process left them with flipside 'landscape'
covers.

Andrew's Acknowledgments
Lastly, I would like to thank everyone that made
a contribution (writing, drawing, advertising, producing and selling) to
the Norwich Science Fiction Group Magazine - in all its varying titles.
There are far too many individuals and companies
to list (although I may have a go if I can spare the time) but you know
who you are . . . I couldn't have done it without you!!
